The Laughing Buddha

The story of the Laughing Buddha, Hotei, reminds us that sometimes the most direct doorway is not explanation but total laughter.

Open-endedCore: Witnessing

Practice style

  1. Stand or sit—either is fine.
  2. Do not search for a reason to laugh; let the belly participate too.
  3. When laughter stops, do not analyze immediately. Sit quietly and feel the afterglow.
Do Not Lose the Witness
The method is only an entrance. Whether it uses breath, dance, sound, darkness, sitting, or relationship, what matters most is gradually seeing what is happening rather than only chasing an experience.
