Anapanasati Yoga Meditation

Buddha used natural breathing as an entrance into awareness: do not force the breath; stay with each inhalation and exhalation, and let awareness gradually include sounds and the whole of existence.

Passive MeditationBreathingCore: Awareness
How do I begin this meditation?

Read through the steps once first. During the actual meditation, play the practice audio; if you will practice without internet, download it to your phone beforehand.

Practice style

Step 1

Follow the breath

Let the breath be deep and relaxed without creating strain. Know when you are breathing in and know when you are breathing out; do not let a whole breath pass unconsciously.

Step 2

Include sounds in awareness

Keep following the breath while hearing the sounds around you. Do not treat sounds as disturbances, resist them, or follow them.

Step 3

Drop 'I am doing it'

Breath and sound continue, while the personal center gradually loosens; like a drop entering the ocean, only existence remains.

Step 4

Keep witnessing at the end

Do not rush to analyze the experience. Sit for a while, or after a night practice move directly into sleep, letting awareness remain soft.

The Direction Is Still Witnessing
Passive does not mean dullness or suppressing thought. Let body, breath, sounds, and thoughts appear as they are while remaining aware.
